HELSINKI WEATHER

The weather in Finland

Winter tours from December to February

About the weather in Finland and the Helsinki weather, this question we always get asked. How is it really in the winter? Do you have snow? How’s the summer? Is it warm in Finland? And so on… Here below you will find some answers to those questions and also what to wear during this different seasons and on the tours we make.

Well, first of all the answer is ”Yes we do!” on all the above mentioned questions. We have winter here officially from December to February and usually there is pretty much snow, depending on the winter of course. This due to the fact, partly maybe because the climate change we are going trough, that some winters are less snowy when other winters, when you could say that there is snow enough and these are usually the winters the people remembers the best. You heard for sure the stories of how our parents used to skii their 20 km long way to school in minus -35° celsius degrees in a snow depth around 2 meters.

Well it can be hard to associate with that today anymore in real life since the most of the people lives around the main cities and the minus degrees goes around -10° to -15° celsius. The typically well organized society take efficiently care of the roads plowing the snow, salting and spreading stone gravel on top the streets making it a little hard to skii your way to school or work nowadays. On the other hand making it safe to proceed over the streets and roads walking and by car. Still people do skii to the school specially on the country side when you can make shortcuts trough the fields and frozen lakes and eventually save alot of time. Ice skating is eventually too really popular among the finns so now wonder we manage pretty good annually in the world ice hockey championships.

We have the possibility to walk on ice during the winter, for more information info@cozynoseytours.com

During winter periods use gloves, a hat, scarf, wollensocks on top of your normal socks, proper shoes, a thick jacket and you will make it pretty good! Don’t forget take with you to the sauna swimming suite/trunks, a towel and flipflops!

Spring tours From March to May

Hello Spring. No winter lasts forever… And we’re off for a tour! The spring is a beautiful time to visit Finland. There is normally still snow around in the spring and the sun starts to show up more and more contributing to warmer and longer days. A mixed feeling of winter and summer, all this can be experienced in just one day enjoying the Helsinki weather!

When we get out on a tour during spring it’s preferable to take breathable clothes and water resistant shoes with you since the terrain and streets are normally pretty slushy during this season. Something warmer to put on under your jacket can be good to since even if the days can be around +10 celsius degrees or more when the evenings are a lot colder, definitely colder than the day, so good prepartion is good to knowledge before sitting next to the open fire in the forrest trying to desperately dry up your new Converse’s and socks. We know, it wont work and it sucks!  Pack with you also swimming suite/trunks, a towel, a bottle of water and flipflops if you got(they are more comfortable to walk in) in the case of willing to try the sauna.

Summer tours from June to August

”Oh! Sweet summer sixteen” or ”The summer of sixtynine” or how it was said, anyways, YES! we love it! The finns are crazy about our precious and short summer and therefore we will enjoy it to the fullest.

Is it sunshine outside? Are the degrees more than +20 celcius? Ohboy baby! Pack the car and lets hit the beach or ”mökki” aka. summer cottage and do barbeque and drink and swim and at ice cream and go pick blueberry’s and so on. Yes we try to get the most out of it once it last, even if it is only for one day, we will make sure we(and in this case you too) will enjoy it! Due to the fact that the summer is so short and only once a year we know how to take care of this precious time. It’s also the time of the polar sun ”The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer months in places north of the Arctic Circleor south of the Antarctic Circle, when the Sun remains visible at the local midnight. It only occurs when the latitude is greater than 65°44’ North or South.” -Wikipedia

The summers are getting warmer here in Finland like in the rest of the world and we have to admit it, we do enjoy it. On the tours you will have access to an air conditioned car during hot summer days and also we are more than happy to show you around and take you to a lake or so to ensure you can cool off by swimming and cool off during the tour. Come as you are on the Cozy Nosey Tours tour but specially during the summer it’s not so specific what can be good to wear on the trip, except flipflops are not always the best footwear to get around in specially the Sipoo or Nuuksio national parks we visit. Tough it’s not either a problem. Sunscreen enthusiasts choose to use sunscreen and we provide mosquito spray whenever we get out in the woods. Take with you your swimming suite and trunks and a towel + some water to drink too. Flipflops are comfortable to use in the sauna.

Autum tours from September to November

Aah Autumn, my favourite time of the year. This is he season when the weather is the most comfortable as the air is really fresh due to a pleasant humidity, the rainy days and the light hours of the day shares pretty equally on day and night time and the Helsinki weather is just perfect. This is also the best time for mushrooming out in the forrest of ours. Of thousands of different mushrooms found in the forrest we pick around 100 of them for eating purpose. Yummy! Also the colors of fall time are makes this the most pretty time of the year.

Once again shoes that can make it in wet weather are preferable during the tours when we are outside in the forrest or town. Likewise the spring the weather can be slightly unpredictable during the autumn so be prepared with some warm clothes and umbrella or gore-tex clothing. Don’t forget your swimming pants and or towel and flipflops if you are crazy enough to try out the finnish sauna that has +100° celsius degrees, afterwards cooling yourself in the fresh air of the autumn or by taking a dip in the refreshing water.

Kaamos, aka. the polarsun, the age of total darkness or 24 hours of darkness. Marraskuu which is the finnish name for November meaning the month of the death which has a normal about 40 hours of sunlight during the whole month! This makes it about 1,33 hrs of daylight per day in Helsinki during November month. You can just imagine December before the first snow has arrived.

Yes, the Marraskuu name pictures the season pretty good with not a single leaf on any tree, rain, really short time of sunlight per day and and collective depression among the finns. This is the time when the flights are packed and the last days of our annual holidays are used to get ourself a little bit of sun, or a little bit more to charge up our batteries to make it trough the rest of the coming winter.

The Helsinki weather

Yes the weather in Helsinki consists of these things listed above. We suffer(read: ENJOY!) in the Capital region of Finland of the same 4 or 5 different seasons that like the rest of Finland, even if Helsinki is situated in the almost southern most part of the country. The capital working normally like every bigger city even if it’s totally freezing cold or too hot. We talk about a scale where from where we switch of up to 65°C  celsius degrees between the both extreme temperature. Don’t forget the sauna, the sauna will even raise the reference value even more!

Though walking in the middle of Helsinki during the winter you might not even feel the winter since some of the street are heated up which means the snow will melt away and a lot of shopping centres in the heart of the city will keep under roof with a comfortable temperature.

Then again the summer helps those present in Helsinki with extraordinary air conditioned spaces and spontaneous beaches all around the city. For sure you might be able to find a place to swim at for yourself! Even though the last summers have been incredibly hot due to global warming, normally the summers in  Finland goes around +25°C daytime which can be considered a pretty comfortable temperature.

Helsinki is also known among the finns for it’s windy weather since it basically situated right next to the sea and it has a maritime climate. So be prepared if you are the “frozen one” with some good windproof clothes visiting Helsinki. The windproof windbreaker is by the way known as our modern national costume;)
